Should You Have A Theme? Considerations

By Bruce Honig ·

While not mandatory, a theme for your retreat can really boost engagement, give it a sense of purpose, and make it unforgettable. Most of my clients don’t bother with a theme, but I think it’s worth considering. If you decide to go with one, here are some things to keep in mind and examples to help you pick the perfect one.

Considerations to Choose a Theme:

1️⃣      Identify Retreat Goals: Determine the primary objectives of the retreat (e.g., strategic planning, team building, innovation).

2️⃣      Understand Participant Needs: Consider the participants' interests, preferences, and needs.

3️⃣      Align with Organizational Culture: Choose a theme that reflects the company’s values, culture, and current initiatives.

4️⃣     Consider the Venue: Ensure the theme fits well with the chosen location and facilities.

5️⃣     Keep it Relevant: Ensure the theme is relevant to the retreat’s activities and discussions.

Examples of Retreat Themes

In deciding whether you should have a theme and what the theme could be, we suggest you talk with your retreat facilitator about this.
