Selecting a Meeting Facilitator

By Bruce Honig ·

When selecting a meeting facilitator for a retreat, avoid choosing someone from your team to ensure their full participation and maintain neutrality. Here are some considerations for deciding who to pick as your facilitator...

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

✔️
Relevant Experience: Ensure the facilitator has experience leading retreats similar to yours in size, industry, and objectives. For instance, if the retreat centers on strategic planning, a facilitator with a robust background in business strategy is ideal.

✔️
Facilitation Skills: Seek a facilitator with demonstrated abilities in managing group dynamics, directing discussions, and maintaining the agenda.

UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR GOALS

✔️
Alignment with Goals: The facilitator must clearly understand the retreat’s goals, whether they focus on strategic planning, team building, problem-solving, or defining values. They should design and execute activities that align with these objectives.

✔️
Customization: Evaluate the facilitator's ability to adapt their approach to suit your needs and context. A one-size-fits-all strategy may not work for your unique organizational culture and goals.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

✔️
Communication: Effective communication skills are essential. The facilitator must convey ideas clearly, listen actively, and engage all participants.

✔️
Neutrality and Objectivity: The facilitator needs to remain neutral, managing discussions without imposing their own opinions and assisting in mediating conflicts if they arise.

Methodology

✔️
Facilitation Techniques: Does the facilitator have experience with various techniques and methodologies? If the focus shifts, they should have a wide range of activities, discussions, and tools ready to encourage participation, creativity, and productive outcomes.
